About LaSalle
LaSalle formed part of Lachine from 1669 until 1848 and became an independent city in 1912, named for the explorer René-Robert Cavelier de La Salle. It was merged into Montreal as a borough in 2002.
The Lachine Canal, cut in the 1820s to bypass the rapids, brought industry and the workers who settled beside it — modest workers' housing, early duplexes, and stone houses along the river. After the Second World War the borough grew quickly into a family-oriented suburb of bungalows, duplexes, triplexes and low-rise apartment buildings, and since the early 2000s former industrial land has been redeveloped with new low-rise condominiums near the water.
