About Pont-Viau
Pont-Viau grew up beside the bridge linking Île Jésus to the Island of Montreal. Ville de Laval attributes the name to a 19th-century farmer who probably held land in the sector. By the end of that century the cluster of houses was known first as the Marigot peninsula near the Viau bridge, then simply as Pont-Viau. The Saint-Christophe parish was founded here in 1915, a first attempt at separate municipal status failed in 1920, and the municipality was finally created on 6 April 1926 by proclamation of the lieutenant-governor. It became a ville on 10 May 1947 and a cité on 6 February 1958, before the creation of Ville de Laval in 1965.
Two things shaped the sector physically. In 1927 the municipality began installing an aqueduct, drawing water from neighbouring Laval-des-Rapides — and in the same year Montreal Island Power announced a hydroelectric dam on the Rivière des Prairies that would flood part of southern Pont-Viau around the Marigot, roughly south of today's boulevards Lévesque and Cartier. The owners of the flooded lots moved to the north of the municipality on condition the aqueduct followed them, so the water network was replanned northward and mains already designed for the south were abandoned. By the creation of Ville de Laval in 1965 the territory was close to 90% developed and the densest on Île Jésus, at roughly 30 people per acre against about 20 in Laval-des-Rapides and 15 in Duvernay.

What that means for renovation and water damage in Pont-Viau

Where an owner is in default of installing or maintaining them, the City is not responsible for backup damage. When we put a basement floor back here, the access hatch stays reachable.
