Ahuntsic-Cartierville sits on the south bank of the Rivière des Prairies, directly across the water from Laval. Its oldest core, Sault-au-Récollet, grew from a Sulpician settlement established in 1696 and still holds houses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Cartierville developed later and for a different reason: it became the northern terminus of the Montreal Park and Island Railway tramway line in 1898 and was incorporated as a village in 1906, named for Sir George-Étienne Cartier.
